One of my “go green” goals is to think a little harder and do a little more research before making clothing purchases. I want it to become second nature to ask such things as “Does this brand consider the environment through each step of the clothing creation process?” “Is this clothing built to last or will it end up in a landfill after just a season?” “Do I want to be an ambassador to this brand my dressing myself or a member of my family in their clothing?” – finding the answers to these questions with regards to Littlest Sidekick Outfitters is easy, inspiring and even uplifting. Read on to find out why I have pledged my support to their Kickstarter campaign, and why you should, too!
What is Littlest Sidekick Outfitters?
Littlest Sidekick Outfitters is a brand new lifestyle brand for adventurous kids. Shannon, the founder, describes her family and the LSO community as being “adventure loving, stick collecting, bagger of the moon, s’more connaisseur, hands in the dirt, kind of people”. What it really comes down to is a mom who saw a need and filled it herself – in her own words:
I found a gap within the outdoor industry. I had 3 major things I wanted out of my son’s clothes. I wanted them to protect him while playing outside. From the sun to mosquitoes & ticks, to the heat in the summer and the cool temps in the evenings. That was one. Two. I needed these clothes to last. I need them to hold up while getting dirty, playing in the woods and climbing around on monkey bars at school. And three. I wanted him to “WANT” to wear them. He has a few select clothes in his closet where he literally will have a melt down if he isn’t wearing it to school.
I knew these “wants” were not going to be cheap. I knew you wouldn’t be able to go to the local Old Navy (no offense – I purchase a huge portion of my son’s clothes from there. Have you seen how cute their t-shirts are?) but you weren’t going to be able to get these for $4 and $5 on a shelf near you.
Shannon searched online, through all of the outdoor brands she knew, and some she didn’t but found yet another gap: kids’ clothes from these great outdoor brands seemed to be just miniature versions of adult clothing. That’s not what we want for our kids – they don’t interact with the outdoors the same way we do, so their clothing shouldn’t be designed to the same standards as ours. So she designed her own line and added some super fun, kid-friendly twists, plus some aspects that parents will love.
Here at Littlest Sidekick Outfitters, we’re on a mission to build quality outdoor apparel for kids. As an interactive brand, we’re providing an experience outside of our apparel line. We’re taking the stories we create on the trail and giving them life. We create memories while wearing our gear, allowing us to take on new adventures. What we don’t realize is that in every garment is a little bit of us metaphorically woven through the fibres of each piece.
The problem is the speed at which our kids grow from the ages of 2 – 12 years. This makes it hard for parents to justify spending the cost of quality clothing knowing their son or daughter will only wear it, if lucky, a year. Through our ThreadTrail system, we’re giving the option for parents to return their kid’s LSO apparel back to us within a 6-12 month period in exchange for a hefty discount towards either the next size up or a new piece of our gear. Through our partnership with the Renewal Workshop, the gently used items will be professionally washed, mended and returned back to HQ to put back up on the ThreadTrail for new adventures to be added to it.
What’s there to love about Littlest Sidekick Outfitters, a lifestyle brand for adventurous kids?
I mean, other than EVERYTHING? I guess if I have to get specific, I can give you 6 really good reasons to love Shannon, her brand, and all that Littlest Sidekick Outfitters is, can be, and stands for! So here we go…
1. Littlest Sidekick Outfitters was created by a mom who “gets it”!
Shannon an outdoor mom and knows what outdoor kids need. It’s really that simple. She just “gets it” because she lives it every day. She knows that our kids learn by touch, see the world differently, need to get dirty, love to notice all of the bugs or point out the moon each night, that they arrange dandelions into beautiful bouquets or perhaps know how to make them into tea or butter or cookies, that nature is a backdrop, a friend, a teacher and a toy. And she knows that not just any clothing will withstand all of that and the many more adventures that are bound to happen. And she recognizes that we as outdoor parents want to invest in quality gear for our kids, but she also knows that kids grow too quickly to use that gear for long. She understands it all. And she made a company that stands behind all of that and more.
2. Littlest Sidekick Outfitters clothing is high-quality, built-to-last clothing!
All of the clothing is made from a merino wool blend. So, it’s everything we love about merino wool with some added stretch and durability, thanks to nylon. A lot of time, research and care went into picking out this fabric, and the same dedication went into finding folks to make the apparel and repair it down the line. You can expect high-quality, built-to-last, pass it down through a few kids, clothing! AND (you can read on for more on this below) – you can send it back when your kid outgrows it and someone else can buy your repaired hand-me-downs!
3. Littlest Sidekick Outfitters is about way more than just the clothing!
So much thought went into creating a kid-friendly clothing line from the moment you receive your clothes to every adventure you take with them, to sharing those stories and reading the stories of others, and so on. Shannon has created a community with LSO and you can be part of that community. With every purchase, your child will receive an interactive box, and access to the ThreadTrail where they can share their stories, buy secondhand clothing that comes with its own stories, and more!
We’re taking the stories we create on the trail and giving them life. We create memories while wearing our gear, allowing us to take on new adventures. What we don’t realize is that in every garment is a little bit of us metaphorically woven through the fibres of each piece.
4. Littlest Sidekick Outfitters has a sweet “ThreadTrail” system closing the loop and keeping their clothing out of landfills!
Children grow out of their clothing too quickly – but they make so many special memories in their clothing in that time. It’s so hard to pass on or donate their clothing sometimes, and other times we have no choice but to toss it and have it end up in landfills. Well, Shannon has created the ThreadTrail system to help solve some of these problems. Once your child is done with their LSO clothing, you can send it back in the handy poly mailer that came with, you can log all of the adventures online, and then receive a hefty discount towards the next size up. Your returned clothing will be washed, repaired, and purchased by another adventure-seeking family looking for some discounted secondhand adventure apparel. And if you buy secondhand from LSO, you have access to the log of stories that goes with that piece of clothing and your child can add their stories to the ThreadTrail and keep it going. How cool is that?
Through our ThreadTrail system, we’re giving the option for parents to return their kid’s LSO apparel back to us within a 6-12 month period in exchange for a hefty discount towards either the next size up or a new piece of our gear. Through our partnership with the Renewal Workshop, the gently used items will be professionally washed, mended and returned back to HQ to put back up on the ThreadTrail for new adventures to be added to it.
5. Littlest Sidekick Outfitters has something for every family!
It can get expensive investing in high-quality outdoor clothing for your little sidekicks, which is why Shannon wanted to make LSO affordable to as many families as possible. You can choose to buy new, and then receive a discount on your next size up if you returned your previous set OR you can save from the start by purchasing secondhand LSO apparel. You can invest in quality clothing without worrying about your child outgrowing them before wearing them out!
6. There’s nothing complicated about Littlest Sidekick Outfitters!
Everything you need to unlock the ThreadTrail and have your child live in LSO clothing until 12 years old or longer comes in that first box – access to the online community, your ThreadTrail code, a poly mailer for your return, and the gateway for your child to enter it all (interactive box, storytelling online, etc.). There’s absolutely nothing complicated about the entire process. No trouble with returns, no triage to get through to talk to some, this is a small family-run business that wants to make getting outside EASY for you and your littles!
