Taking care of our bodies, particularly our skin, is important to us as an outdoor family. Our skin is one of the ways that we interact with the great outdoors. We touch, we feel, we walk barefoot, we lay in the grass, we collect acorns, we are kissed by the sun, we climb on rocks, we dig our toes into the sand – and we take great care in being able to enjoy these things again and again. We do this by choosing appropriate footwear, wearing comfortable socks and base layers that allow our skin to breathe, donning hats, drinking lots of water, and more. But something that many people don’t do, is practice good skin care, specifically with the outdoors in mind.

Skin Care for the Outdoor Family, what does that even mean? We weren’t very good at this before but we are getting better. We’ve found that there are things we can do before heading outdoors, while we’re enjoying the outdoors and after returning from the outdoors that help us take care of our skin in ways that allow us to continue enjoying all of our adventures. Some of these tips will be obvious to you, like wearing sunscreen, but others will hopefully be new and will help you practice good skin care before, during and after your time in the outdoors. This will ultimately lead to more fun outside as a family, and cheers to that!

Hi, Monica! I really enjoyed reading this article. You did a great job providing very useful tips and recommending a great brand. Also, people tend to forget that taking care of your skin before AND after spending a day out is important as much as doing that during a hike. I was wondering, did these products work for all skin types?

There are 4 different varieties of the liniment – plain, coconut, shea, and shea and coconut. And all of them have been tested on my husband’s very sensitive skin as well as my infant-toddler son.

I love the idea of put lotion on cheeks and noses before going out in the cold. They get so chapped sometimes especially my little drooly ones.

All great tips. Both my children are prone to eczema so constant skin care is a must in our family, especially with all our outdoor adventures. I should check out some of the products you mentioned!
