I received these items at no cost to facilitate my review. All opinions remain my own.

The last time we bought hiking boots was in early 2012, right before a month-long car-camping trip in the Maritimes that had us hiking over 200km in all sorts of terrain. Since then, we’ve put easily another 400km on those boots. We took well enough care of them, cleaning and waterproofing them, but it’s safe to say we were in dire need of an upgrade. And with Huckleberry doing more and more hiking on his own two feet, he needed some sturdy kicks of his own.

It had been so long since our last hiking boot purchase that I wasn’t quite sure where to begin in terms of shopping. I started paying attention to what other people were wearing, what they were talking about, what brands they trusted for their kids and themselves. Time and time again the name KEEN came up. My father-in-law trusts his KEENs for all of his adventures from the everyday to hiking and canoeing. Fellow Hike it Baby parents had KEENs on their own feet and on their kids’ feet. Even the less outdoorsy people bragged about how their kids outgrew KEEN footwear before they wore them out – that the same pair of KEENs were worn by all of their children and were then passed on to nieces and nephews. It seemed to me that there was only one answer: KEENs for the whole family!

Our first impressions of our own boots? Genuinely surprised at how light they were! In the backcountry, every ounce counts. And no one wants the extra weight to be on their feet. Our first test drive (and this was not our best decision, lol, read on to learn why) was a 4km hike into a backcountry campsite with about 50lbs on our backs, and I was lifting my knees up to my chest in excitement over how light my feet felt!

So why was that not the best choice for a test drive? Well, one typically needs to break in new boots with shorter easier hikes to make sure the fit is right, to avoid blisters, etc, but we went big right away. This worked really well for Trail Dad in his Gypsum II Waterproof Boots but was not great for me. My feet weren’t sitting quite right and had too much room to move. The constant rubbing of my heels against the back of my Terradora Waterproof Boots left me with two large tender blisters. I was heartbroken. I wanted to love my beautiful new KEEN hiking boots but wasn’t sure they would let me hike back out to the car at the end of our camping trip. After some quick googling, I learned that lacing my boots a little differently, in what was called a “heel lock“, could solve all of my problems. And it did!

Other than that slight fit issue, we have been nothing but impressed by our KEEN footwear. We love how durable and supportive, yet lightweight, low-profile and attractive they are. They are also waterproof! And Huckleberry LOVES his Chandler CNX Shoes. They are ridiculously easy to put on (not long and he’ll be doing it himself) and quick to dry when he puddle-jumps. We are so happy with our KEEN hiking boots that we’ve since purchased KEEN sandals too! Well, Huckleberry and I have, and now Trail Dad is jealous and wants KEEN sandals AND shoes! I don’t see us buying anything other than KEEN footwear anytime soon!

What we love about our KEEN Footwear:

  • They are lightweight! I mentioned how delighted we were at how light our KEEN footwear is. Every ounce counts on the trail and packing extra weight on your feet is not fun. These boots are lightweight enough to add a skip to your step, light enough that you’ll want to wear them everywhere!
  • They are waterproof! We hike rain or shine. We ford creeks and small rivers. We canoe and we aren’t very good at it. All of these things mean that we’re bound to get wet boots, but that doesn’t meet we have to suffer through wet feet! Note: the Toddler’s Chandler CNX shoes are not waterproof.
  • They are rugged and built to last! Built for adventure, wild terrain and some serious use and abuse, KEEN footwear is tough! The rubber outsoles are thick and durable. The tread is phenomenal. The upper, insole and midsole materials are performance quality. We expect to put a lot of miles on these boots.
  • They are easy to put on! This goes for our boots as well as Huckleberry’s shoes. The slings on the ankles and tongues are large enough to for even the fattest of fingers, and then a simple tug is all it takes. Huckleberry can almost get his own shoes on and I enjoy not having to wrestle my feet into boots.
  • They are activity specific! When you shop KEEN footwear, you can shop “boots”, “shoes” or “sandals” plus also “hiking”, “casual” or “work”. And each product has a short list of suggested activities. So you can get just what you need for backpacking, trail running, paddling or otherwise.
  • They are versatile! Despite being great for particular activities, KEEN footwear is versatile enough to support more than what you bought them for. Lightweight and fashionable enough for downtown trekking, rugged and comfortable enough for peak bagging, flexible and waterproof enough for paddling, we are happy with the versatility of our new footwear.
  • They come in half sizes! This is my biggest peeve when shopping for footwear. Size 7 is always too small and size 8 is always too big. But KEEN footwear comes in 7.5! This is a huge selling point in my books!

What we would change if we could:

  • Kids’ waterproof shoes start at size 8. When Huckleberry really started walking on his own, he was a size 6. We grabbed him some KEENs in a size 7, knowing that would give him a little room to grow. And although his Chandler CNX Shoes are quick-dry, they are not waterproof. In the spring, I think we’ll grab him some Oakridge Waterproof Boots in a size 8 for all of our outdoor adventures.
