Before we get to the congratulations, let me tell you a little bit about what a Liebster Award is…
What is a Liebster Award?
A Liebster Award is peer-nominated blogger award designed to recognize new(er) and small(er) blogs and support fellow bloggers by spreading the word about the great things that they do. The Liebster Award dates back to 2011 and is a sort of new-age chain letter of blogger love. Someone nominates you, you give them a nice shout out, answer a sort of interview proposed by them, nominate a few other bloggers and present your own interview questions. I think it’s a fabulous way to share with you, my readers, some of the blogs that I follow, and a little bit more about me! And as a new blogger looking for some love, I am honoured to be nominated!
Who nominated me?
Jacqui, over at Adventuresome Sprout, nominated me and shared her great excitement over my new Humans of the Outdoors blog series. It was through this nomination that I learned about Adventuresome Sprout, and if it wasn’t against the purpose of the Liebster Award, well I’d nominate them right back because they run a great blog all about getting outside and travelling with their Sprout. There are tips & tricks, how-to videos, recipes, a green living guide and so much more! Plus, we have a lot in common! It was actually Simply Mom Bailey who told them about Maman on the Trail, so really, we all have her to thank. Thank you, thank you, thank you! To all of you!
The Liebster Interview:
1. What is one of your favourite foods to make? (bonus points if you include a recipe. I love food )
I love to cook and I love to eat. I don’t know if I could pick one favourite food to make. Definitely a dessert, probably my Gramma’s Rhubarb Cream Pie. But according to Bookworm the Trail Dad it’s cupcakes, and I need to make some really soon, he says. And I do love me some bonus points, so here’s the recipe…
Filling: 4 cups rhubarb, cubed. 1 1/2 cups white sugar. 1/3 cup flour. 1 cup sour cream, full fat.
Topping: 1/2 cup flour. 1/2 cup brown sugar. 1/4 cup butter, softened.
Place rhubarb in pie shell, scatter a few slices of strawberry to taste. Mix sugar, flour and cream and pour over rhubarb. Combine topping ingredients until crumbly and sprinkle over pie. Bake in oven at 450F for 10 minutes or until top is golden brown.
2. What is your favourite blog to follow?
Ugh, so many tough questions and we’re only on the second one! I might have to go with Maman Loup’s Den. Lindsay has the perfect sense of humour and two adorable cubs. She also writes about quite the range of topics, so I’m never bored.
3. What is your favourite child/baby camping or hiking gear (pick 1 item)?
I guess this is where I admit that we haven’t camped with Huckleberry…yet. As for hiking, we’re in love with our Onya Baby Outback. We’ll be needing something a little more rugged soon, though.
4. Tent, camper, or hotel?
Tent. Hands down. That was an easy one!
5. Are you a light packer or a heavy packer?
I’ve always prided myself in being a light packer. With Huckleberry around now, I’m having to relearn how to pack only the necessities.
6. What is your favourite outdoor activity?
Hiking. And forest bathing, which is really just slow hiking and lazing around in the woods.
7. What is one place you have visited that you think everyone with kids should visit?
Can I say the outdoors? That’s a place, right? I think everyone with children should make an effort to spend a minimum of 30 minutes in the outdoors 3 times a week. And by the outdoors, I mean more than just your backyard. I think we would all be a lot happier.
8. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I’m a little bit obsessed with western Canada right now. I mean, I feel like before I do any more international travel, I should at least see more of Canada. Eventually, I would love to hike in every province and territory. Bookworm and I spend a lot of time daydreaming about a year leave of absence from work, buying an RV, and seeing the whole country.
9. Tell us about one thing you have done that challenged you (physically or mentally) and that you are proud to have accomplished.
When we spent a month camping in all of the national parks in the Maritimes, we climbed Gros Morne Mountain. It’s not a huge climb, but it was big for us. And it was a lot of firsts. It was our first real full-day hike, our first scree slope, our first summit of any kind, and the first time we doubted ourselves on the trip. I had been sick the entire night before. Kirby too. I’m talking we gave up on the tent and rented a cabin and I spent the entire night in the bathroom. It also rained. And Kirby spent a lot of the night out in the rain. It was bad. We also rearranged our trip to even be able to do it, because they opened a week later than when we originally passed through there, so we came back for this. That morning was rough but we were determined. I think there might have been a few other kinks but it all worked out. And it was incredible and 100% worth it! We even saw a caribou calf and a rock ptarmigan! We plan to return there with out trail babies someday.
10. What are your biggest obstacles/struggles to getting outdoors with your kids?
Habit and routine. When we build outdoor time into our routine and do it often enough that it becomes habit, we’re golden. If the routine gets thrown off too many days in a row, a new habit is formed and we don’t prioritize outdoors time the way we should. It’s definitely something we’re working on.
11. What is something that you have learned about yourself while exploring the outdoors?
I strongly believe that I learn something new about myself every single time I explore the outdoors. I have learned that I am strong and resilient. I am stubborn and caring. I am smart and curious. And I like how quiet the world is when it rains.
My Liebster Award Nominations:
Although not all necessary “new” or “small”, I feel that these blogs deserve some recognition and are a joy to read!
Wildroots Outdoors: I am smitten with the entire Wildroots Family! They are everything we want to be and more. Nathan and Candace are raising their boys wild and it’s a beautiful thing. Even if you never check out their blog (which you should, because it’s full of awesome advice), the least you could do is follow them on Instagram. You will be awed. Daily.
Potty Adventures: The perfect picture of your average adventuring family. The weekend warriors! David is a teacher and Natalie is a social worker, and on the weekends they adventure with their two little ones like it’s their job. They have an entire section of their blog dedicated to mini adventures. Humour, guidance and inspiration are what you’ll find with them.
Call Me Crunchy: Alix is a self-proclaimed full-blown crunchy granola hippy lady, with a husband, a son and some fur babies. She is a wealth of knowledge on all things green. And I can’t get enough of her Crunchy Collection posts or Instagram photos.
Fill in Our Family: Kirstin is a personal friend, and she and her husband, Josh, just recently became parents to a spunky little boy named Asher. Their journey into parenthood was a 5-year rollercoaster waiting game that ended in a whirlwind trip to South Africa to become a family of 3. Do you want to see their little man in action? Check out his hashtag: #hashertag.
